Combatting the summer heat requires a combination of solutions that will cause your garden to thrive. Shade in the desert heat is important, but the normal solution, shade cloth, can be problematic in an area where more than half the day usually involves some level of wind. Natural shade, such as tall plants, or vining plants over a trellis or cattle panel, allows the wind to blow, cooling the plant, without removing the shade. Another way to keep the garden cool is to add woodchips to protect the soil or plant ground cover. The last we address here is providing a water feature to give water to pollinators and birds that hang out in the garden. Visit our craft event section to sign up to create a water feature.
